Welcome to Starsand Island
You've just arrived on Starsand Island with nothing but the clothes on your back and a dream of building a new life. This guide will walk you through your critical first days, help you avoid common mistakes, and set you up for long-term success. The island is packed with things to do, but knowing where to focus early makes all the difference.
First Day Priorities
The moment you gain control, head straight to the [General Store](/wiki/locations/general-store) and talk to [Zerine](/wiki/characters/zerine). She'll offer you the Crafting apprenticeship — take it immediately. Crafting is the foundation of everything else on Starsand Island. You cannot progress in any other profession without basic crafting ability, so this is non-negotiable.
After completing Zerine's introductory tasks, you'll unlock your Worktable, which lets you build tools, furniture, and other crafting stations. Spend the rest of your first day gathering softwood, stone, and plant fiber from the area around your farm. You'll need these materials constantly in the early game.
Before the day ends, make sure you've also picked up your skateboard from the quest prompt. The skateboard is your primary mode of transportation early on and drastically cuts travel time between locations. You'll eventually upgrade to a bike from Neona at G-Power Bike, but the skateboard carries you through the first few weeks.
Take All Five Apprenticeships
During your first week, visit each profession mentor and accept every apprenticeship. There's no penalty for taking them all, and you'll need all five eventually. Here's where to go:
- Crafting — Zerine at the General Store - Farming — Graminova at the Happiness Seed Shop - Fishing — Delphin at AquaBlue Outpost - Ranching — Pastelle at Green Pasture Ranch - Exploration — Zephyria at the Exploration Club
Each mentor gives you starter quests that teach the basics and reward you with essential tools or recipes. Even if you don't plan to focus on a profession right away, the apprenticeship quests give valuable items you'll want sooner rather than later.
Stamina Management
Stamina is your most precious resource in the early game. Every action — chopping trees, mining rocks, tilling soil, fishing — costs stamina. When it runs out, you're done for the day.
Sitting on benches or chairs recovers stamina for free, though slowly. Place a chair near your work areas to take recovery breaks. Eating food also restores stamina, so keep cooked meals or foraged items in your inventory.
The curfew is 2:00 AM. If you're still out at 2 AM, you'll pass out and wake up the next morning with only 50% stamina. If this happens three consecutive days in a row, you'll lose an entire day — you'll wake up having skipped a full day of the calendar. Plan your evenings accordingly and get home before the clock runs out.
Don't Sell Your Softwood
This is the single most common beginner mistake. Softwood looks like a basic, plentiful resource, but you'll need hundreds — eventually thousands — of it for crafting stations, upgrades, furniture, and construction projects. Selling softwood for quick cash in the early game will leave you grinding trees for hours later. Stockpile it. You'll thank yourself.
Water Pump Placement
When you start farming, you'll craft a Water Pump to irrigate your crops. Place it in the center of your tilled soil area, not at the edge. The pump waters tiles in a radius around it, so centering it maximizes coverage. Poor pump placement means wasted time hand-watering outer tiles or needing extra pumps earlier than necessary.
Bag Expansion
Your starting inventory is painfully small. Prioritize bag expansion as soon as it becomes available through crafting progression. Extra inventory slots let you stay out gathering longer without running home to dump materials. Each trip back to your farm is wasted stamina and time, so bigger bags pay for themselves quickly.
Early Money Tips
Cash is tight at the start. Here are the best early-game money makers:
- Fishing is the fastest early income. Even basic river fish sell for decent amounts, and you need zero infrastructure to start. Just grab a rod from Delphin and go. - Wheat is the best early crop. It's cheap to plant, grows in all seasons, and the harvests add up. Plant as much as your watering capacity allows. - Don't sell raw materials like ore, wood, or fiber. The processed versions (bars, planks, cloth) are worth more, and you'll almost certainly need the raw materials for crafting.
Key NPCs to Visit in Week One
Beyond the five profession mentors, make sure you visit these NPCs during your first week:
- [Alex](/wiki/characters/alex) at [Lex Woodworks](/wiki/locations/lex-woodworks) — Alex handles home upgrades and construction projects. Introduce yourself early so you can start planning expansions. - [Neona](/wiki/characters/neona) at [G-Power Bike](/wiki/locations/g-power-bike) — Your skateboard won't cut it forever. Neona sells bike upgrades that make traversing the island much faster. - [Stella](/wiki/characters/stella) at [Woof & Wow Pets](/wiki/locations/woof-and-wow-pets) — Pets provide passive bonuses and companionship. Visit Stella to learn what's available and start working toward your first pet. - [Marston](/wiki/characters/marston) at [Starsand Port](/wiki/locations/starsand-port) — The port is your gateway to deep-sea fishing, trading ships, and island expansion. Marston's reconstruction quests unlock huge late-game content.
Warning: Retroactive Quest Credit
Starsand Island does not give retroactive credit for most quests. If a quest asks you to "catch 5 trout" and you already have 10 in your chest, those don't count — you need to catch 5 new ones after accepting the quest. The same applies to crafting, gathering, and delivery quests.
The takeaway: accept quests before doing the associated activity. Check the bulletin board and NPC quest lists before you head out for the day. This saves enormous amounts of duplicated effort, especially for time-consuming tasks like fishing rare species or growing specific crops.
Your First Week Checklist
To summarize, here's what a strong first week looks like:
1. Take the Crafting apprenticeship from Zerine on Day 1 2. Build your Worktable and basic tools 3. Get the skateboard 4. Visit all five profession mentors and accept apprenticeships 5. Visit Alex, Neona, Stella, and Marston 6. Start fishing for income 7. Plant wheat on your farm 8. Expand your bag as soon as possible 9. Stockpile softwood, stone, and plant fiber 10. Get home before 2 AM every night
Starsand Island rewards preparation and punishes waste. Take your time, plan your days, and don't try to do everything at once. Focus on one or two professions per day while keeping your crafting queue busy, and you'll be thriving in no time.
